Seven shades of Gold and Silver, and Bronze: FLASS lights up Geneva
EdUHK showcased its excellence in research and innovation at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. Among the 11 awards won by the University, seven are from FLASS, including one international Special Prize—the Romania Special Prize, one Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury, two Gold Medals, one Silver Medals, and two Bronze Medals. This result consolidates the Faculty’s international standing and growing reputation as a leading force in impactful research and technology transformation.
The award-winning projects spanned diverse fields, including healthcare technologies, artificial intelligence, and GreenTech. These inventions reflect FLASS’s longstanding commitment to addressing real-world challenges through interdisciplinary approaches, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and research, and actively translating research outcomes into tangible benefits for society.
Among the highlights, “EmoCare – An AI-powered application to foster emotional well-being”, developed by Professor Song Yanjie of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, won the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury. Another project, “RoMetric: Intelligent Hand Function ROM Assessment System”, developed by Dr Fu Hong, Associate Professor of the same department, received a Gold Medal.
“BioSentinel Passive eDNA/eRNA Enrichment and Sampling System”, developed by Dr Cheng Jinping, Assistant Professor in the Department of Science and Environmental Studies, received a Gold Medal and the Romania Special Prize. “From Sludge to Structure: Transforming Waterworks and Sewage Sludge into Concrete with Varied Compressive Properties”, the project led by Dr Tsang Yiu-fai, Associate Professor in the same department, won a Silver Medal. His team’s invention transforms waterworks sludge and sewage sludge into concrete by replacing the aggregates and cement in conventional concrete materials.
A student from the inaugural cohort of EdUHK’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology (BSc(AI&EdTech)) programme also took part in the exhibition. Chung Ki-ki developed an AI-driven microwave sensor for non-invasive coolant level monitoring and leak detection, winning a Bronze Medal. Dr Amanda Chu Man-ying, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies, won another Bronze Medal for FLASS. Her invention, titled “ASAP: Automatic Speech Analytics Program for Early Personalised Psychosocial Health Assessment”, provides real-time psychosocial vulnerability screening via textual and acoustic pattern analysis.
Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Research and Development), congratulated all participating teams. “At EdUHK, our research is purposefully directed towards advancing human development and translating scientific breakthroughs into tangible, real-world solutions. EdUHK’s participation in the exhibition was coordinated by the Knowledge Transfer Sub-office. Dr Lemon Kwan Hok-ming, Director of Knowledge Transfer, expressed his delight at the outstanding results, noting that they fully reflect the dedication and contributions of EdUHK’s researchers.
The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is one of the world’s foremost platforms for showcasing breakthrough inventions. The 51st edition was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 11 to 15 March 2026, featuring more than 1,000 pioneering innovations from over 35 countries and regions.
